EULOGY FOR THE SURRENDERED — WORDS ON ‘ALEAS’
I would like to introduce the first part of the Aleas series ahead of its release this week.
The music is an attempt to rebuild an art practice upon the principles of freedom and human connection. Three years ago I began a tortuous journey of recovery, admittedly pushed by the urgency to fix the parts of myself I had come to despise. At that point my ability to create personal work had been steadily declining for a while, and would have soon become completely paralysed. It all felt unavoidable. But more than hurting, this angered me: for a millennial fully devoted to the religion of self-made entrepreneurialism, I could not accept the thought of stillness. My ambition could not accept it.
I believed that the work would have saved me, but only once it could have been perfect. I thought that by leaning further into ambition I could iron out any of its flaws, and mine in turn. The ego laid out a plan, outlined a perfect form for my work to fit into way before knowing what the work even was going to be. Silly attempts to negotiate against the fear of the unknown — and of doing. Everything grew devoted to this arrogant idea of becoming infallible. But the more I worked to serve this vision, the further I alienated myself from reality. Now I see that I could never outwork anything, and how uncertainty is essential to any creative practice — you could say of any life, too.
“The existential anxiety of our society is the individual trying to go it alone, deprived of secular and sacred counsel. With nothing before held as credible and nothing definite to follow, we seek our own advice for our own salvation.”
(P. London, Beyond Individualism in the Arts)
Does music have to be infallible? Do I have to be?
I try to face these questions and some more in the Aleas series. It’s a clear diversion on the path, a leap towards becoming my own imperfect form-maker (borrowing from Eugene Gendlin here!). But more than anything, this is an act of surrender to the process. This first group of songs was composed with old and new friends across video calls and noisy computer mics, embracing chance and all other oddities of the process. Exercises to remove inner resistance. After losing the privilege of working in a studio last year and being forced to sell most of my equipment and material possessions, this was the urge I was left with: to make for the joy of making, from the humblest place I could find within me. To use music as a means for community and sharing.
In October 1991 the biggest theatre in my hometown, and the fourth in the whole country, was burned down overnight in obscure circumstances. The building lay destroyed for ages — it took eighteen years before its reopening. I only recently understood how much the sight of those ruins affected me growing up. I thought that art had been stolen from us, that we had lost it to a monster in the sea (PS: the beautiful film Lua Vermella ☾☾☾ by Lois Patiño explores this feeling incredibly well). I felt to be often working in an attempt to gain it back - but can it ever be taken away?
With love and gratitude,
